Modern Market Bag

by Brandy Burke June 27, 2023

I’ve been working hard to clear out my bucket of cotton yarn scraps for the last two weeks. I call anything partially used a scrap, meaning I have remnants that are nearly full loaves of yarn and some that are but a yard or two.

I ran across this modern market bag pattern and thought it would use a few scraps – I didn’t realize that the bag is actually rather large and would really hit my scrap bin, I’m grateful because as soon as I run out of these scraps I get to have a field day replacing cotton yarn. Shopping is always fun.

I am an affiliate. That means if you click on any link on my website and make a purchase, I may receive a small commission at no additional cost to you. Thank you for supporting my work.

I’ve really been into crochet farmer’s market bags this summer – though we’ve only gone to the Farmer’s Market once this season, we typically go a few times and I never want to be the gal at a sustainable farmer’s market event with a single-use plastic bag. I also just like making bags. Especially since I took my own personal crochet rule pledge recently to only crochet useful items.

You can grab the bag at the link below and scroll a little further to grab a free handmade care instructions printable, too!

This bag is definitely a top 3 on my favorite farmer’s market bags to make – it’s a mindless activity – and comes together really cute.

How to Choose Your Yarn for the Modern Market Bag

This pattern uses cotton yarn – though mercerized cotton yarn is lovely to work with and offers sheen, I prefer to use a dishie cotton for added durability and feel. You can find dishie style cotton wherever you buy yarn but I personally love the ones below from Knitpicks

Yarn Wall Re-organization

by Brandy Burke June 20, 2023

Affiliate Links are below. An affiliate link means that if you purchase something after clicking on my link I may receive a few cents commission in return. Thank you for supporting content creators.

The most common questions I receive all revolve around my yarn wall – what’s the best yarn storage, what supplies did I use, how do you make a yarn wall, is it hard, do I like it, etc. I talk a lot about how I organize my yarn with a yarn wall and recently, I did a bi-annual reorganize and restock round which I captured to share on Tiktok and youtube.

Even the best yarn storage systems will come a little unraveled after repeatedly dipping into the stash daily to work on projects and the yarn wall is no exception. I’ve found that I can let the wall get messier than I could my previous yarn storage system (shelves and bins) because everything stays pretty together an untangled, but eventually, it needs a little work.

For a reorganization and re-stock, I utilize pretty much the same tools as I originally used, with a few steps in between.

Step 1: Thorough Review and Inventory

Okay, not so thorough – it’s not like I have a spreadsheet of what yarn I have in stock. But a quick glance will tell me if I’m running low on colors and also gives me the opportunity to pluck out yarns that need to be put through the yarn winder again.

Step 2: Wind it up!

I use my yarn winder and turn on my favorite crafty Youtube videos and wind my yarn into nice little cakes. I don’t wind too tightly so that I don’t cause any damage to the yarn — it’s something I read somewhere but personally, I’ve never damaged my yarn even when I wound it into tight little tubes.

Step 3: Secure.

I utilize hair clips to secure my yarn cakes. This just keeps the end nice and tucked in which is important to me because too many little strings hanging from the wall would make me need to re-organize more than just a couple of times per year. In the past I have also used skein coats which I like quite well too.

You can follow my crochet/creative days and craft storage solutions on Tiktok or Youtube @hookandpaper

Yarn Wall Video

Here’s a full video on my yarn wall reorganization process – it was a huge undertaking but the end result brings me a lot of inspiration, peace, and calm.

Easy Unique Crochet Farmer’s Market Bag

by Brandy Burke May 24, 2023

I’ve recently become obsessed with this new crochet farmer’s market bag pattern that I stumbled across. So much in fact that I’ve made many for my daughters and my mother. I like that it’s a repetitive stitch that I can utilize while sitting and watching television and that the handle portion is well thought out – something I find isn’t so on many reusable grocery bag patterns.

We had a family farmer’s market day a couple of weeks ago – both my daughters and their husbands, my husband, and my parents joined me in downtown OKC at Scissortail Park for a bit of shopping followed by brunch. I was really disappointed that I hadn’t thought at the time to make them these bags, but they do at least have them now.

With the endless color options available, this one pattern can go a long way in making gifts for friends and family and even for market events.

I am an affiliate - this means if you click on any link on my website and make a purchase, I may receive a small commission at no additional cost to you. Thank you for supporting my work.

I did not create this pattern, but I love it so much that I’m happy to share it:

I love a good farmers market bag and this one works up so quickly - grab the pattern!

How to Choose a Yarn for Farmer’s Market Bags

For this bag, I ended up using a mercerized cotton from ILTY. Typically, when making farmers market bags, I prefer a cotton with a little more structure like a dishe cotton. They aren’t as smooth to work with as a mercerized cotton but they are sturdy and durable – here are some of my favorites:

When Farmer’s Market Season is over, the cotton washes up nicely until next season – or they work great for groceries, dance bags, diaper bags, and can be easily reused.

Easy Crochet Bow Pattern

by Brandy Burke November 18, 2022

While working on my crochet ornament tree I looked up several crochet bow patterns. They were all intricate with multiple pieces to sew together. My attention span doesn’t always allow for that – so I decided to make an easy crochet bow pattern just like you would for your shoelaces – out of just one long strand.

It doesn’t really require a pattern but for the sake of ease, the pattern is below.

I am an affiliate. This means that if you click on a link on my website and make a purchase, I may receive a small commission at no additional cost to you. Thank you for supporting my work.

How to Crochet a Bow

  • Any Size Hook
  • Any weight yarn

Step 1: Make a long chain – in the example, I chained 61

Easy Crochet Bow Pattern Part 1

Row 1: SC in the second chain from hook and in each stitch across. Ch1 and turn.
Row 2-?: SC in each chain across. In my example, there are 5 rows.
Tie off and weave in ends

Second step in crochet bow

Step 2: Fold the piece into a loose bow shape

Loosely folded crochet bow

Step 3: Cut a strand of yarn 30″ long (longer if you’ve done a thicker bow)

Step 4: Pinch the center of the bow together and wrap the yarn around the bow tightly, shaping the bow as you go.
Weave in the tail on the backside. I don’t think it gets any simpler than this easy crochet bow pattern. It’s versatile so you can make it as thick or as wide as you desire with the change of hook or yarn or initial chains.

Optional: You can use stiffener spray if you’d like a sturdier bow. I didn’t for mine, which is draped on my Christmas tree but would probably do so if I was giving it away (like as part of a wrapped present decoration) or if I was using it long term – such as on a permanent piece of decor in my home. I’d also probably consider stiffening this crochet bow if I was using it on a hair accessory – but for the Christmas tree, I like it rather drapey.

Christmas Crochet Ornament Tree

by Brandy Burke November 17, 2022

In June I started thinking about creating an entire Christmas tree of crochet Christmas ornaments. There were tons of cute ornament patterns I wanted to try but I didn’t want to compromise the theme I have for my main family tree and I also didn’t want to subject my husband to crochet ornaments everywhere in the living room (even though he fully supports my crochet addiction.

I found a 6.5-foot white Christmas Tree online at Walmart over the summer and snagged it with this idea in mind.

Here are the ornaments on my Crochet Christmas Ornament Tree.

I am an affiliate. This means if you click on any link on my website and make a purchase, I may receive a small commission at no additional cost to you. Thank you for supporting my work.

Crochet Penguin Ornament

Gosh if he isn’t my favorite little guy. Took me right at an hour and 15 minutes which surprised me.

Get the crochet penguin christmas ornament Pattern Here

Crochet Christmas Bauble Ornament

I had to really adapt this pattern to fit my bauble (we always called the bulbs so bauble is…) I used a 3.5mm hook and half double crochets. It was completely trial and error as I tried so many ornament patterns with the same result – the finished result was too big, saggy, sad. So try various yarn weights and go down many hook sizes if needed.

You can find the crochet Christmas bauble ornament Pattern Here

Crochet Owl Ornament

I could see making a lot of this little guy and stringing them together for Christmas, Halloween or Thanksgiving…or summer. So many uses. I want to make a rainbow set of crochet owls to give as gifts. If only time would allow it.

Grab the crochet owl Christmas ornament Pattern Here

Popsicle Tree Ornament

I found an adorable pattern that uses popsicle sticks – I love taking patterns and adapting them to my own needs or creativity, which is what I’ve done here – I made one set of all the pieces and glued it to an actual popsicle stick.

See the inspiration for this ornament Pattern Here

Crochet Stocking Ornament

Who doesn’t love little crochet stockings!!!!? I made a plain color for my ornament but you could stripe this like the pattern designer and it’d be super cute. I also thought about adding fur yarn to the top.

Crochet stocking Christmas Tree ornament Pattern Here

Crochet Snowman Cocoa Mug Ornament

This little guy is precious and I think outside of the other options the pattern creator listed a rudolph mug would be super cute. My daughter liked it so much she asked me to make her one – which is a real compliment for a momma.

Snowman Cocoa Mug Pattern Here

Crochet Chain Garland

This crochet garland is quite possibly what makes the tree pop. I made it of all different colors but you could make it with your color theme of choice and it will be beautiful. You could also vary the stitches to create something a little more textured if you desire (like a bobble stitch).

This is an easy one to just make while you’re watching tv, you just have to make a lot of little crochet strips to cover a 6-foot tree

Crochet Christmas Chain Garland Pattern Here

Crochet Granny Tree Ornament

There’s no pattern for this one – I just made two granny triangles and added a stump and stuffed it.

Crochet Pickle Ornament

We hide a pickle ornament on the tree and have done so since the kids were tiny so this seemed fitting. I used the wrong hook so we have an enormous pickle ornament for our Christmas Tree.

See the Crochet Pickle Ornament Pattern Here

Crochet Bell Ornament

I made several of these as fill-ins since they are so quick and easy to make. They made great filler in areas that needed a little more attention.

Find the crochet bell Christmas ornament Pattern Here

Crochet Gingerbread House Ornament

This ornament is adorable – I made mine smaller and left it simple because it didn’t need much to know what it was.

Pattern Here

Crochet Star Ornament

I also made several of these, mostly because the actual pattern is so fun and they also come together quite quickly and can be made in multple colors in one star if you wanted to add a little something funky to it.

Pattern Here

Crochet Poinsettia Ornament

I could have tried harder with this one but it was among the last ornament to come into creation and I was tired. I will likely make a few more of these in various fun non-christmas colors for this tree.

Pattern Here

Crochet Bow

I looked at a lot of bow patterns online before deciding that they were more complicated than they needed to be, so I made my own. I shared the easy crochet bow pattern with you here.

Pom Pom Christmas Tree Topper

I’m still deciding whether to keep this one or go with a crochet star – this one is funky and I like funky, but I’m still not sure about it.

My Cricut Storage

by Brandy Burke October 30, 2022

I’m excited to share where I landed on Cricut Storage. Last month for my birthday, my husband gifted me a Cricut Maker 3. He knew I had been wanting one but that I wouldn’t pull the trigger and buy one for myself. Not only will I not make large purchases but I also knew I had nowhere to put it. I’m a serial crafter – so there’s a lot going on in my craft room. His gift meant excitement coupled with the question “how do I store my Cricut and accessories so that I will use them”

I know with any craft supply, if it’s tucked away in a drawer, it’s likely to harden, discolor, or dry up before I get to it. So I like to have everything where I can see it and within close reach — which can be hard in a 14X14 bedroom.

I did a lot of research on Cricut organization and there were so many options but I didn’t want to buy a lot of furniture or carts so I devised a plan to use what I have already and spend very little on storage.

I am an affiliate. This means if you click on a link on my website AND make a purchase, I may receive a small commission at no additional cost to you. Thank you for supporting my work.

How I store my Cricut Maker

I don’t store it – but I do have it in its own space on a desk. I keep it at an angle so that the materials can run smoothly without hitting anything.

I store my Cricut mats in an old magazine storage rack on my desk next to my Cricut maker.

I also have a magnifying lamp mounted above the machine so that I can see tiny bits and bobbles when weeding or drying to lay something straight.

How I Organize My Cricut Vinyl

My DIY Cricut Vinyl Storage wasn’t my own idea but I can’t remember where I saw it originally — either TikTok or Pinterest I’m sure. I purchased these stackable shoebox drawers that have door fronts on them for the vinyl organization. If you use smart materials, you’ll want to be sure you get drawers that are over 13″ deep so that the rolls will fit into them. Here are the specific drawers I purchased as Cricut vinyl organizers.

Cricut Vinyl Organization

I used to use rubber bands to keep my Cricut vinyl rolls tight but I wanted something different – the bands break on me and are also easy to misplace so I went for slap bracelets – you remember the ones we used to have as kids. I wrote the brand and type of material on the slap bracelet (not the color as I want these to be reusable)

Vinyl Roll Storage with Slap Bracelets

All of my vinyl rolls fit nicely into the drawers and are within easy reach when I’m crafting. I have them sorted by permanent

How I Store My Cricut Accessories

Under my desk, there’s a rolling cart with my canvas bags, t-shirts, acrylic blanks, etc. I don’t even have to stand up or reach to grab what I need.

On the back side of my desk, I have a rolling cart with a top on it, it holds my heat mat and my Cricut mini press as well as any vinyl scraps, etc.

Setting up my Cricut craft space like this has been super helpful in keeping everything within reach and visible so I feel inspired to use it.

Decked Out Crochet Scarf Pattern

by Brandy Burke September 1, 2022

I’ve had this scarf strumming up inside of me for a while, but with the recent attack of carpal tunnel syndrome, I’d been putting it off – finally, I just decided to do it even if it took me many more days than it should have. And it did. I crocheted for days when a scarf like this should just take a few hours.

Did I create a scarf with poms and tassels for the first time all on my own out of thin air? I did not. Of course. If you search on Pinterest and Google you’ll find plenty of scarves that have one or both elements, but none were exactly like I wanted, so I created my own pattern, and it’s free for you to use if you’d like.

This pattern is great for both beginners and advanced crocheters. There aren’t any fancy stitches or tools needed (outside of a pom maker if you have one, otherwise, there are plenty of tutorials online for how to make a pom without it.

Crochet Owl Eye Mask

Crochet Owl Eye Mask

by Brandy Burke September 1, 2022

I created this owl eye mask pattern years ago when you couldn’t find one on the internet – it was on my old website – you can see it here on the wayback machine from Oct 27, 2016. Since then many people have posted it to their own blogs, it’s flattery – but now that this blog is back up, I’m re-posting the entire post with pattern below:

Through the early stages of my early menopause, my number 2 complaint was my sleep patterns. If the hot flashes and night sweats weren’t enough, I’d be awake all night after them staring at the clock, the moonlight through the window shades, the red light on the smoke detector – basically anything my eyes could focus on.

I had an eye mask that my husband bought for me with a pajama set years back for Christmas but after I have a night sweat in something, I don’t want to put it back on until it’s clean – needed a few more and happened to run across a thousand different patterns on Pinterest for eye masks. I found three I really liked one element or another from and pieced together an owl eye mask that I love!

You can find it everywhere online with little tweaks that customize the crochet owl eye mask for the maker or their intended recipient and I love that about this project.

I am an affiliate, this means if you click on a link and make a purchase, I may receive a small commission at no additional cost to you - thank you for supporting my work.

Granny Square Guide

by Brandy Burke August 5, 2022

Welcome to the complete granny square guide, where I attempt to answer every question that is asked about these adorable little projects all in one place. Though I have been crocheting for almost three decades, it was only in the last decade that I answered the urge to create my first square and since then, everything seems to be the result of one of them. If you’re interested in making one, but feeling a little nervous, just pick up that hook and try it. It’s much easier than it looks and the end result is gratifying.

If you have questions that aren’t answered within this post, please comment or reach out – the goal is to make a comprehensive post where all of the questions are answered.

What’s a Granny Square?

A granny square is a piece of crochet work that combines granny stitch clusters (see below) along with chains to create a square. When joined with other granny squares it can create several finished pieces. The traditional pattern is simple and works up very quickly. For folks like me with a short attention span, these are dreams in the world of crochet. They utilize small amounts of yarn, so it’s a good use for scrap yarn. Though they can be intimidating if you’ve never tried one, the traditional granny square is beginner-level.

What is the Granny Stitch?

Sometimes people refer to the granny stitch or the granny shell, this simple stitch is just 3 double crochets in the same stitch. To turn this stitch into a square, you’ll need a corner (not pictured below). To make the corner, you do 3 double crochets, chain 3, and 3 additional double crochets all in the same stitch.

Why is it called a granny square?

The general belief is that we call it a granny square because once granny was too old for manual labor, she tended to be the one to create and stitch them together. I sometimes wonder if the name has caused people, in general, to perceive crocheters as older women. I began crocheting regularly in my very early twenties, and it doesn’t bother me when someone says it’s an old woman’s craft. I hate that they’re missing out.

How Old are Granny Squares?

Speaking of old, granny squares have been around for a really long time. The first documented one came into existence in the late 1800s, around 1891. If you’re trying to do the math, that’s 131 years ago. So maybe now they’re called granny squares because they’re old enough to be your great, great granny…

Whatever the reason, even non-crocheters know exactly what you’re talking about when you mention them. Though cyclical in popularity, they never go away.

How big is a granny square?

Though various yarns and hooks can change the size of a traditional granny square, traditionally, they tend to be 4 rounds and measure about 4 inches when using medium/worsted weight yarn and my hand dandy 4.5mm crochet hook. There really is no limit to how large you can make a granny square and many people create large square blankets out of just one square. I also like to make them from embroidery floss and a small hook to create earrings. The pattern is at the end of this post.

Crochet Granny Square Earrings

How many different kinds of granny squares are there?

There is only one traditional granny square but as time has gone on, yarn artists realized that these handy squares can be fashioned in different ways. Personally, if it isn’t a traditionally granny square, I believe it should be called a square motif but even I tend to slip and call it a granny from time to time, too. Here’s an example of what I would consider a motif. It’s a square, but not a traditional one. It’s called the sunburst pattern, but many refer to this universally as a granny.

Crochet Sunburst Granny Square Pillow

What are granny squares used for?

Granny Squares can create a variety of finished pieces when sewn together. In the 1970s so many clothes were created, granny square vests, cardigans, scarves, hats. In 2022 they tried to make a comeback at target but Target received criticism from shoppers who believed that they had people hand-make the clothing for low wages. I’m still not sure if that was ever proven. If it was machine-made, that is disappointing as well. Crochet is the handwork of art. It’s not a machine’s talent. Anyway, that didn’t last long at the store.

Here’s my favorite piece of clothing made from squares:

How do you make a Traditional Granny Square?

These simple little squares are created by clusters of the granny stitch that join by a single or double chain to create the corners. There are usually four rounds in a square. For the skilled crocheter, each square takes approximately 10 minutes to create. The frustrating part about the granny square is only trimming off and weaving in the ends, but I have a simple trick for that.

How do you make a granny square scarf?

There are a couple of ways to make a granny square scarf – you can either create multiple small squares and sew them together into one long piece, or you can create a rectangle granny square using the granny stitch. I share more about that later in this post.

How Do You Make a Granny Square Bag?

I really do love making granny square bags, and square motif bags. There are many ways to create a granny square bag, and I’ll share many of them below. The bag in the below photo is excellent for farmer’s markets, they’re a total vibe and I get plenty of compliments every time I tote one along. Their construction adds just enough give, but not too much, which is good because some other bags I’ve made have drooped to my ankles when I filled them up. Not a good look!

  • Crochet Granny Square Bag

How do you make a granny square blanket:

You can make a granny square blanket just by sewing the squares together one by one to make a blanket in whatever length and width you desire. Though the squares have gaps in them, they are surprisingly warm and when made with a soft yarn, they’re incredibly comfortable too. If you’re making a granny square afghan and you aren’t working with a pattern, you can quickly determine how many granny squares you will need with this calculator. I tend to not be that planned with my projects, and only just found this calculator. Bookmark it.

How do you make a granny square pillow:

This is my favorite way to use a granny square. Or maybe my second favorite way because they make cute earrings too. You can make a large granny square and then sew all the corners together in the back. While I don’t have the pattern written, these images show how to create this. I worked this one up for our guest room to cover an old enormous sofa pillow and bring all of the colors of the room together in one place. I love how it turned out.

Front of granny square pillow on a bed

Back of granny square pillow sewn together
Back of Granny Square pillow. Bring the edges together and stitch.
  • You can also make a granny motif pillow.

To Block or Not To Block:

I don’t always block my squares – but if you need them to retain their shape – perhaps for your earrings or a bag, many crocheters will go ahead and block their squares. This is an easy, yet additional step that many crocheters swear is imperative. I disagree, but in a kind, fellow-crocheter kind of way. Still, if you’re up for the task, here’s how.

How to Block Your Granny Square:

  • First, you’ll want a granny square blocking board and some pins, you can get these from most yarn and craft stores or online. You can also make your own out of a peg board and pegs or foam and pins. I find that a board created specifically for the purpose of blocking my squares is my preferred route.
  • Get your square wet – either by submerging in water completely and then pressing the water out in a towel or by misting your square until it’s wet but not dripping.
  • Lay our square flat against the board and working from the inside out, gently stretch your square into shape, pinning as you go.
  • If necessary for your project, consider using yarn stiffening spray which can be purchased at most craft stores.
  • Leave in place until full dry or for at least 3 hours.
