A few years ago, I made my daughters’ farmer’s market bags, they were loose net crochet and really exactly what you picture one to look like — but a combination of using to wrong yarn (acrylic) and a loose stitch made the bags really droopy. They sag to your ankles when full of fresh goodies. So I decided I’d try to make a bag out of granny squares and see how it works for this purpose. It’s technically a tote bag, but in my world, it’s a granny square farmer’s market bag.

If you can make a granny square, this will be a breeze for you – and you can make a bag like this using your favorite granny square – this pattern utilizes the basic granny so even if you’re unfamiliar with how to make one, if you can double crochet, you’ve got this.
You could also sew in a sturdier strap if it matters to you – for this one, I just did simple single crochet from side to side. Since it’s cotton yarn, it holds its shape pretty well.
Admittedly, we haven’t gotten to use these at the Farmer’s Market yet – it doesn’t begin until April first and so we’re only a few short weeks away – but I have loaded this thing up with all kinds of stuff to test it out at home and it’s definitely sturdier, so maybe we won’t trip over our bags while we walk along this year.
